Outstanding Autograph Letter Signed, “Jacob Lynch” 1p. quarto, Abingdon, Virginia, July 24, 1840, with integral leaf addressed to Colonel James McDowell (1795-1851)Nephew of James Patton Preston and John Floyd; cousin of John Buchanan Floyd; father of Sally McDowell (who married Francis Thomas). Democrat. Member of Virginia state house of delegates, 1831-35, 1838; Governor of Virginia, 1843-46; U.S. Representative from Virginia 11th District, 1846-51. Died in Rockbridge County, Va., August 24, 1851. Interment at Stonewall Jackson Memorial Cemetery, Lexington, Va. McDowell County, W.Va. is named for him. The letter reads “At a meeting of the ‘Democratic corresponding committee’ for Washington county held at the courthouse on the 18th inst. The undersigned were appointed a committee, to fix on a convenient day for a general meeting of the people, and to invite such distinguished members of the party as they might think advisable to attend said meeting. We therefore respectfully request that you will favour us with your company and an address to the people on the political topics of the day, on such day as you may designate...” Signed by Danl.
