COLFAX, Schuyler. (1823-1885) Vice President under Grant 1869-73, Representative from Indiana, Speaker of the House 1863-69, Whig activist and founder of Indiana's Republican Party. Colfax was implicated in the Credit Mobilier scandal and was ruined politically despite being completely exonerated. Colfax was the first officer to preside over both houses of Congress. Group of seven Autograph Letters Signed, “Schuyler Colfax” dated 1856-1881, with content pertaining to politics, speeches, and more. Two are penned on Congressional letterhead, all VG.
