Autograph Letter Signed, "David Hayden" 3p. folio, Columbus, Mississippi, June 31, 1840, with integral leaf addressed to his father Cotton Hayden of Massachusetts, and reads in part: "...am now engaged in the commission business...G.B....was shot last winter by some ruffian on his return from Mobile but has recovered from his wound. I do not know of any thing further that would be of interest to you save the present selectment in the approaching election [of] William Henry Harrison & Tyler is all the go here and from all accounts we have great assurances of his being elected..." Near Fine. When Harrison took office in 1841 at the age of 68, he was the oldest man to become President - a record that stood for 140 years, until Ronald Reagan became President in 1981 at the age of 69. Harrison died thirty-one days into his term - the briefest presidency in the history of the office. He was also the first U.S. President to die while in office. His death threw the country into a constitutional crisis.
