Part II - Life as a Freeman.” New York and Auburn, Miller, Orton & Co., 1857, with an Introduction by Dr. James M'Cune Smith, and Editor's Preface. Dark brown cloth, blind-stamped designs on bot h covers, printed in gilt on the spine. 464 pp. Great engraved image of Douglass from a daguerreotype by J. C. Buttre. Covers cracked at spine. Douglass published three versions of his autobiography during his lifetime, each time expanding on the previous one. The 1845 Narrative, which was his biggest seller, was followed by My Bondage and My Freedom in 1855. In 1881, after the Civil War, Douglass published Life and Times of Frederick Douglass, which he revised in 1892.
