An 1861 view of the sturdy detention cells used by Alexandria, Virginia slave dealers Price, Birch & Co. For many raw Union troops this establishment was their first encounter with the South's "peculiar institution." Much ado was made in the North over the series of photographs of which this image is a part. The slide presented here was published by Taylor & Huntington, Hartford, Connecticut and was sold via the company's "Original War Views" series. Fine
