Newspaper, National Intelligencer, Washington, February 25, 1862, 4pp. filled with war and congressional reports. From the front page, “Execution of a Slaver,” reports the death of Nathaniel Gordon, “captain of the slave ship Erie which was captured off the coast of Congo by the US sloop of war Michigan, with a cargo of 967 Negroes ... This is the first execution under the law declaring the slave trade to be piracy.”
