NASH, William Beverly ((1822?-1888) was born a slave in Virginia and was brought to South Carolina during his adolescence. Emancipated by the war, he remained in Columbia and accumulated substantial property and business interests and later serving as a state senator from 1868-1887. Autograph Letter Signed, “W. Beverly Nash,” on official State of South Carolina Senate Chamber letterhead, February 10, 1870, to Myles L.M. Myers, Brooklyn, NY., 1pp. In full, “Dear Sir, Permit me to Congratulate you on the Ratification of the fifteenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America.” The 15th Amendment to the Constitution granted African American men the right to vote by declaring that the "right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude," being ratified on February 3, 1870.
