ELLIOT, Robert Brown (1842-1884) African American United States Congressman from South Carolina, 1871–1874, associate editor for the South Carolina Leader, a Freedmen’s newspaper, Autograph Letter Signed, “Robt. B. Elliot,” on official Forty-second Congress US, House of Representatives letterhead, 1pp., Washington DC, April 7, 1871, to J.S. Myers, Brooklyn S.I. In part, “Yours of the 31st came to hand. In answer I woould say that as soon as my speech shall have been published ... I shall be pleased to send you a copy ....” On April 1, 1871, Representative Elliot made a speech from the Congressional floor fighting the activities of the Ku Klux Klan, and opposed the granting of general amnesty to ranking ex-Confederate military officers and civilians.
