An interesting war-date Confederate Treasury Department letter, 2pp. 4to., by a certain A. L. Edmands, on CSA Treasury Department stationery, Richmond, Va., Aug. 31, 1861 to Lt. Col. Charles B. Tebbs, 8th Virginia Infantry concerning a young lad who was imprudently enlisted in the army, reading, in part: "Your note respecting Hugh was sent to me by Lt. Baxter…I went immediately to…Baxter & told him that I would today find him & procure his release…this morning I called on Gov. Letcher who…gave me a letter to Genl. Winder who has charge of the prisoners…the Genl remarked that…Mr. McCabe was released…yesterday & had joined a volunteer company here…& was informed by Col. Moore that he had enlisted him for Captain Bogg's company. I went immediately to see our friend C. B. Ball who had procured his release & Charley thought we had better let him go on with the company…& we went down to Col. Moore's office where we met with Hugh. He seems to be perfectly himself & I hope will do well. They had given him a very nice uniform & will…join his company tomorrow. The Col. told me if he found the duties in the line too hard for him he would have him detailed as apothecary. His captain…you know is a methodist preacher. Most devotedly did I thank God my dear Tebbs when I learned that all through the terrible Battle of Manassas he had kept you safely as in the hollow of his hand. May your life & health continue to be precious in his sight…". VG
