Autograph Letter Signed "R M Rucker," one page, quarto, "On the Potomac Va," January 23, 1862, to his parents. Private Robert M. Rucker, Co. "A", 2nd Tennessee Infantry initially saw service in the Virginia theater as this letter attests. In February, 1862 Rucker's regiment returned to Tennessee, fought at Shiloh and participated in virtually every major Western campaign. Rucker was captured in March, 1865 and ended his war a POW at Point Lookout, Maryland. This early letter describes easy winter living and reads in part: "…little in the way of military duty to perform and that in the way of Pickett guard and that is so arranged in the Regiment that it only comes to my time once in every two or three weeks, so that there is nothing to get wood…none sick in the Company and but few in the Regiment…" Folds, else VG.
