REGULATIONS FOR THE ARMY OF THE CONFEDERATE STATES, 1863 (Richmond: West & Johnson, 1863), 432 pp., 8vo, marbleized boards with applied cloth spine, inside front cover initialed "RBJ", inside back cover inscribed "R. B. Johnston AQM / 62nd N. C. Regt." This rare hardbound manual covers all aspects of military procedure and decorum. Sample forms for various departments are interspersed in the text. The book's owner was Captain Robert Bruce Johnston of Buncombe County, regimental quartermaster for the 62nd NC. Johnston enlisted on May 1, 1861 and initially served in Co. "C", 16th NC Infantry. Wounded at Seven Pines on the Virginia Peninsula, he would recover to accept staff assignments in the 14th and 62nd NC Regiments. The latter regiment was at Cumberland Gap, Tennessee when it was surrendered to Ambrose Burnside on September 10, 1863. Captain Johnston was incarcerated at Point Lookout, Maryland for the war's duration and survived to end his days teaching school near Asheville. Johnston's book remains tightly bound and internally clean with only light aging and scattered foxing. The board covers are worn, but sound. Overall good condition
