GORDON, John Brown (1832-1904) CSA Maj. General. His army service began with election as captain of a mountaineer company known as the ‘Raccoon Roughs’ and ended as a corps commander at Appomattox. During the battle of Sharpsburg he was so severely wounded in the head that only a bullet hole in his hat prevented his drowning in his own blood. He was three times elected to the U.S. Senate (1873-1880) and (1891-97), and was once governor (1886-90). He was also the first commander-in-chief of the United Confederate Veterans.Signed Check “J.B. Gordon,” 1pg. 8" x 2-1/2”". August 2, 1881, to his sister E.L. Connally for sixty dollars to pay two months rent. The check is from the Fourth National Bank of New York in New York City, and is in fine condition with a stamp cancellation across the first portion of the autograph.
