War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by 1st Sergeant "S. A. Rand", Co. G, 2nd Ohio Cavalry, "Annapolis, Maryland, March 31, 1864", in part: "…we left Cleveland on Thursday…on the Ohio River we were ferried across and took a train of cars for Baltimore…the Valley of the Shenandoah lies on both sides of the River of that name…this Valley is a fine farming country and has the appearance of wealth and plenty. Harpers Ferry…is surrounded by high and rocky hills which are covered by cedar and laurel. The Potomac is very wide at this point and is spanned by an iron bridge…all along the route we were cheered on by the ladies who thronged the doors and windows waving flags [&] white handkerchiefs…our men responded by waving…swinging hats and cheering…we are…part in Gen. Burnside's coming expedition…troops are coming daily…he is to have 20,000 blacks and 40,000 White troops…our destination is a profound mystery…". The original transmittal cover is included. VG.
