Another war-date Union soldier's battle letter written by Pvt. Timothy O'Sullivan, 1st Connecticut Heavy Artillery, to Astoria, Connecticut, reading in part:("In Front of Petersburg, September 18, 1864, 2 pp.)…we left Bermuda Hundred Tuesday the 13th and relieved Co. D. They lost 17 men here. Mrs. Trusdale's son was wounded the day before we came and I fear mortally. We have 4 mortars in our battery 3 in another and 2 in another…we have kept up fire pretty much since we came and are fortunate so far we have none killed or wounded…we lost two men by sickness and one killed since we left Fort Richardson. Some of our company have suffered through sickness Co. B have every other man sick…the pickets and sharpshooters are quite near us and nothing but batterys all along the line on our front. Petersburg is only one mile from here. It will take longer to go that than any mile I ever saw. The Engineer Corps is counter mining our fort as it was reported the rebs was going to blow it up…we expect a heavy engagement in a few days. It's all artillery that is fighting now with the exception of pickets and sharpshooters…". VG
