War-date Union soldier Autograph Letter Signed by Fred B. Beach, 20th Iowa Infantry, 2pp. quarto, Headquarters 20th Iowa, Point Isabel, Texas, November 19, 1863, addressed to Adjt. General for the State of Iowa, N.B. Bake, and reads in part: "...The regiment was obliged to leave this place on an expedition up the coast desination supposed to be Corpus Christie, and the Adjutant ordered me to send you the report of the skirmish on the Atchafalaya, La. in which Lt. Col. J.B. Leake was taken prisoner and two of our men were missing. We had thirteen of our men detailed as mounted infantry to accompany Col. Leake who was in command of the forces engaged. They were posted as a picket in force about eight miles from the main body and were surprised and defeated by the rebels on the 29th of September. Col. Leake was wounded and taken prisoner and Corp. Jacob S. Cummins of Co. 'H' and Private Robt. Troop of Co. 'E' were missing. Rob't Troop was detailed for temporary duty in the Battery. We made a landing on the coast of Texas without resistance..." Fine condition.
