War-date Union officer's Autograph Letter Signed by Lt. Gilbert J. Tisdale, 9th Iowa Volunteers, 4pp. quarto, Camp on Walnut Hills, Mississippi, June 6, 1863, addressed to Governor Kirkwood, and reads in part: "...My position is that of 1st Lt. 9th Iowa Volunteers. I entered the Regt as a private in Co. F of that Regt. I was transferred to Co. E by order of Lt. Col. Herron, and promoted to Orderly Sergt on the solicitation of the officers of Co. E sustained by vote...I was wounded at Pea Ridge, fighting at my post, and afterward promoted to my present position, over 2d Lt. E.A. Creary who had incurred the odium of the Co. by not going into the fight. It was considered by all concerned, and acknowledged by Lt. Creary himself that I was the best qualified for the position..." He goes on to say that the men in his regiment who do not endorse him are "not temperance men, and are in the habit of making such a use of liquor - intoxicating liquor, as to set a bad example before the regt...all of them have been repeatedly durnk and that the fact of my opposing their promotion and refusing to sign the temperance certificate, is the reason that I am not the person recommended for promotion...."
