From the Corporal Marshall P. Wood correspondence to his wife in Rindge, New Hampshire. They read in part: "(Nicholasville, KY, August 25, 1863, 3 pp.)…I have returned once (more) into the good old state of Ky. And was not I glad to get back…I think I took cold riding on top of the cars…I lost my cap and I think I took cold that way. My head began to ache in the first place and then I lost my appetite and then my strength and by that time I was flat on my back…(Paris, KY, September 15, 1863, 4pp.)…Oh I am glad I am not a drafted man. I should feel like a foal out here in these old regts…I am still at the Hospital but am feeling pretty smart only I am weak…there are negro girles right clost by. One of them is right under us that does our washing…" (Paris, KY), October 7, 1863)…My health is first rate. I feel most as well as ever I did only I have not much strength. I am pretty thin…I weighed 127, I weighed before I was sick 150…Most all of the boys have the shakes and fever but I have not had them but once… (Paris, KY, October 11, 1863, 4pp.)…all of the big folks have negro survants, two or three of them and as many little black ones a running round. They are not back neither they are just about half black. There is a lot of black girls here and they dress as rich as the white do…" (Paris, KY, October 25, 1863, 4pp.)…Our Brigade had orders to go to Tenn last week but the officers flew around and tried not to have it so…The Doct. said that there should not a man go that had had a chill within a month…I understand that the 6th Regt has been ordered to Camp Nelson that is where we was before we came here…I bet before a week our Regt will be ordered there.. I shall not be fit to go…(Paris, KY, October 30, 1863, 4 pp.)…Orders came last night that our Regt would stay here this winter…I think I shall come home in a few weeks if I can get away…I presume in the spring we shall have to go to fighting again and perhaps I shall never have another chance to come home…" (Paris, KY, November 23, 1863, 5pp.)…Sim is going home on a furlow sometime this winter. There was two that went last week from our Co…You need not look for me yet…Did you think of my birthday, only think twenty six years old. I feel as though I was forty six… (Paris, KY, November 29, 1863, 4pp.)…The ladyes of Paris gave us a dinner. There was three long tables full of turkeys chickens pies bread preserves pickles and a lot of other things to numerous to mention. The Battery Boys was there. I should think there was one hundred in all…"
