Ten war-date 9th New Hampshire Soldier's Letters written by Corporal Marshall P. Wood correspondence to his wife in Rindge, New Hampshire. They read in part: (Paris, KY, January 4, 1864, 4 pp.)…We was ordered to report to Camp Nelson eight miles below Nicholasville where we shall go from here…they say the whole 9th army corps are agoing to meet there . I think we are going off on an expedition somewhere under General Burnside… (Paris, KY, January 12, 1864, 4 pp.)…I never can stand it to march and camp out in this weather. I shall have the shakes before night…There is quite a number in our Co. that is not able to go…If I have got to be in this show I had rather be in the Invalid Corps…(Paris, KY, January 13, 1864, 3 pp.)…I have just nailed up a box to send home for I think we shall go tomorrow. I thought I would send home a blanket for I know I can not carry it… (Camp Nelson, KY, January 20, 1864, 4 pp.)…Our Co. and Co. G and Co. F hadto pitch tents and such a time we have had since it was all mud where we had to pitch…It was as bad as anything we had last winter at Falmouth…The story is now that Burnside is getting up an expedition to Texas and we have got to go to New York to start from there…I more think we shall go to Tenn than any where else. I hope we shall not stay here in this muddy hole long…(Camp Nelson, KY, January 24, 1864, 4 pp.)…We are expecting to start tomorrow morning on our way to Knoxville Tenn…I have scene them that came from Knox. And they say rations have been pretty short there…I guess furlows will be pretty scarce now if we go south… (Point Isabella, KY, February 1, 1864, 4 pp.)…We started last Monday and arrived at Camp Dick Robbinson about sundown…the next morning we started and marched all day…the roads are all stone and such mud I never saw…The 7th R. I. Regtis camped clost by they belong to our brigade…(Camp Burnside, KY, February 11, 1864, 4 pp.)…We have had orders come in this P. M. to move out to Knoxville. When I do not know…we have buried two out of our Regt. Since we came here. Their graves are in sight of me as I sit in my tent I can see them. It is sad to think of being left out here so far from dear friends…(Camp Burnside, KY, February 21, 1864, 4 pp.)…We are not going any farther towards Knoxville than we are now…the 7th N.J. are here and they will go back with us…there is three sutlers here so we can get anything we want if we feel disposed to pay their prices…I had rather buy things off the citizens. Thare is a lot of them in camp every day. They pitch in ginger bread and pies short cake some eggs…(Camp Near London, KY, March 5, 1864, 4 pp.)…I wish you could see how they live out here,,,the houses are all made of logs and full of holes and cracks and about a doz. Young ones at the door and 3 or 4 dogs… (Nashville, Tennessee, March 26, 1864, 4pp.)…we got here last evening about 7 o'clock and was taken to the Soldier's Home…I came through the corner of the State of Georgia…We are going to North c. after we get to Md. I hope they will give us a chance to come home after we get to Md…". All overall VG
