Autograph Letter Signed "Michael McGuire," 170th NY Infantry, 4 pp., 8vo. , Petersburg, Virginia, September 29, 1864, to Mrs. E. G. McGuire (his wife), New York City, cover included. Maguire enlisted as a private in Co. "D", 170th NY Infantry on October 7, 1862 and attained the rank of 2nd Lieutenant in under two years. The 170th NY wasin the field continually for over two years, however its war didn't begin in earnest until the Battle of Spotsylvania in May, 1864. Thereafter the regiment saw continuous action through the Appomattox campaign. Maguire's letter reads in part: "…there was very hard shelling here last night…there was an order out last night for this corps to move except those that are in the front line and the 69th and 8th N.Y. Attly…there is something Desperate on foot but up to this time the remnants of the Brigade has not moved yet but everything is in readiness…McConnley and some of the officers have been released from Richmond…Co. D don't get any larger…it is the smallest in the Regt…" Light toning as expected, Fine condition.
