War-date Union officer’s Autograph Letter Signed by Samuel Slade, 51st Ohio Infantry, who enlisted September 1861 and was mustered out October 1865, 4pp. octavo, Chattahoochee River, Georgia, July 7, 1864, and reads in part: “...we compelled the enemy to evacuate their more than strong position at Kennesaw Mountain and fall back across the Chattahoochee. We are only 8 miles from Atlanta which can be seen very plain with a ‘field glass’ from a hill in the vicinity of our camp but that 8 miles is one continuous line of forts and fortifications but they line those we have taken must fall in time to the indomitable energy of Sherman and his troops, but many a brave has fallen during the campaign. On the 30th one of my best friends in the Reg. fell from a Reb sharpshooters bullet. Lieutenant Frank Shriver [DOW 7/9/64] Commander of Co. B shot in the head I think the wound is mortal so it goes one after another. We fall for our ‘country and flag’ will we have the satisfaction of knowing that if we fall it is in a glorious cause that of Human Liberty and the prayers of all the Loyal and True will follow us go where we will. Our Regiment was engaged in the 20, 23 and 24 of the past month. We lost quite a number of good soldiers but we whipped the enemy...” More. Fine condition.
