LOWE, Thaddeus S.C. (1832-1913), was an American Civil War aeronaut, scientist and inventor, mostly self-educated in the fields of chemistry, meteorology, and aeronautics. In July 1861 Lowe was appointed Chief Aeronaut of the Union Army Balloon Corps by President Abraham Lincoln. His inventions and patents on water gas process and ice making machines made him a millionaire.Autograph Letter Signed, "T.S.C. Lowe discusses business adventures, in part "I returned from Philadelphia .. yours of the 12th is received mentioning the Dispatch from California as also safe arrival of the shad in Louisville. I think we can safely go ahead with the California matter ... The proposition I read to you seems to meet with favor. ... I drew upon you for 42500 which I was obliged to have as my Cr would suffer more than I could afford at this time. A friend who I expected a loan from was out of the city and I had no other resort. ..."
