CDV pencil identified in lower margin, the verso having an E. & H. T. Anthony backmark. This is possibly a late prewar image of Buckner while he was in the pro-Southern Kentucky State Guard. Though the general served competently throughout the war, his 1862 surrender of Fort Donelson to U. S. Grant followed him like an unwelcome shadow. Buckner was a survivor, however, and would rebound to be elected Governor of Kentucky in 1887. This portrait has clipped corners, but is otherwise a solid VG.
