CDV pencil identified on both sides with the backmark of Brady's National Portrait Gallery, New York below a 2-cent revenue stamp. A former West Pointer and an accomplished cavalryman, Averell clashed with Confederates led by such notables as Stuart, Morgan and Early. He survived the war to invent American asphalt, thus bequeathing a legacy to future automotive generations that is arguably equal to an intact Union. Bumps and possible glue residue to the upper margin. Nearly VG.
