Identified in pencil as "Wm. O'Toole" on the verso, this oval cadet image is mounted to an 8 ½" x 10" board imprinted "Brady…New York" in gold ink. The sitter entered the U. S. Military Academy on September 1, 1861 and bypassed Civil War duty by embarking on a four-year course of study. Earning a 2nd Lieutenant's commission, O'Toole was variously stationed in Missouri, Kansas and Dakota Territory until resigning from the service in 1870. Light edge browning to the mat, else VG.
