Newspaper, “The Illustrated Police News,” December 20, 1879, tabloid, 16pp., disbound. From an inside page, a 1/4 page important engraving regarding the right of women to vote, with caption “Virgin Voting at Boston .. Dec 9 - The Women Exercising For the First Time Their Newly Conferred Rights ...” In 1879 Massachusetts women won the right to vote in school committee elections, but that would be the extent of their enfranchisement until the U.S. Constitution was amended in 1920. And on the back page, six vignettes of fraudulent Doctors including abortionists. This is very early for the cartoon discussion of abortion.
