WASHINGTON, George (1732-1799) First President of the United States and commander of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. ST. CLAIR, Arthur (1736-1818) Major General during the Revolution, was President of the Continental Congress in 1787. War Dated Free Frank signed “Geo. Washington, addressed to “Major Gen’l St. Clair, Springfield.” It is then docketed in St. Clair’s hand, “General Washington, February 27, 1780, Morris Town. The piece is front panal and docket area of back panal, and has been mounted. Washington wrote St. Clair on February 22nd, 23rd, and 24th, all concerning movements around Paulus Hook, New Jersey. Likely this cover carried at least one of those letters.
