A complete issue of the New York Times, April 21, 1856, 8pp., disbound, VG. From the interior and running 1/2 column, “The Slave Case - Curious Development,” brings the report of the expense of bring rendition through the Federal courts. In part “And we may as well state something near the actual costs of restoring the fugitives in this case ... But besides these there were 200 or 300 other deputies sworn in ... making the total not less than $21,456 to the United States guarding four of Five grown slaves and, we believe, three children. It is not too much to say the expense of the Gaines trial to the government was over $30,000 ....”By far the most shocking of all fugitive slave cases was that of Margaret Garner who killed her own daughter to keep her from being returned to slavery. After several legal motions, the slaves were ordered back into to the custody of the Kentucky plantation owners Marshall Robinson and Archibald K.Gaines. The safe return of the Garners to slavery had been insured by engaging hundreds ofmen to act as special marshals.
