A complete and authentic issue of the Harper’s Weekly, April 23, 1859, 16pp., disbound, VG. From the front cover, “Fac-Simile of Mrs. Sickles’s Confession” with a full page report of the Sickles trial. In 1859, in Lafayette Square, across the street from the White House, Sickles shot and killed the district attorney of the District of Columbia Philip Barton Key II, son of Francis Scott Key, who Sickles had discovered was having an affair with his young wife. Then, a suburb centerspread, “New York City and Environs From The Spire Of Dr. Spring’s New Brick Church, Fifth Avenue.” On a separate page is a 15 point key to the illustration identifying points of interest in 1859 New York.
