Newspaper, a complete and authentic issue of The Gentleman’s Magazine, London, November 1741, 56pp., disbound, VG. From the interior and running 1-1/2 pages under “State of the War in America,” there is a speech by Governor Shirley advises the British and American troops activity in the Caribbean including Cuba. This is the War of Jenkins Ear. In small part, “...that Mr. Winslow, Captain of one of the five Companies which were raised for His Majesty’s Service ... against the Spanish West Indies ... And I am further informed by Capt. Winslow, who was several weeks in Cuba before his departure from thence upon the service of raising recruits here, and is a gentleman well known among us ... that he left 2400 of His Majesty’s Forces and 1000 Negroes, safely landed on the island of Cuba, on the Sourthernly side ...” These were Negro Troops raised in Jamaica.
