Confederate Stonewall Brigade letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. John W. Middleton (1835-1907), Co. H, 27th Virginia Infantry, (WIA & POW Pickett's Charge, Gettysburg 7/3/63), Camp Harman, Aug. 24, 1861, in part: "…the Yankees made an advance movement yesterday morning. They drove in our pickets…a battle was contemplated. Our brigade was ordered out and marched down as far as Fairfax but when we got there we heard that the Yankees had run and that our men were below Falls Church and our pickets were within 2 miles of the Chain Bridge. There are some fifty thousand of our men in advance of our brigade. We were ordered to our camp where we arrived about 11…last night…it will be a long time before I have that pleasure unless I get wounded. If I do I will certainly let you know as soon as possible…I hope the good Lord will keep me safe…but his will be done. If it should be His will that I should die. I hope to meet you in heaven where parting will be no more…J. W. Middleton…". VG The original transmittal cover is included. VG
