Confederate Stonewall Brigade letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. John W. Middleton (1835-1907), Co. H, 27th Virginia Infantry, (WIA & POW Pickett's Charge, Gettysburg 7/3/63), Stephenson's Town, Va., June 18, 1863, in part: "As we are not moving now I will write…I am well…but very tired and dirty. Walking and perspiring all day and dust settling on me has made me a perfect fright…I am sometimes tempted to get away…anything in preference to this nasty dirty life, Our division of the army is laying along the river, part on the Va. and part on the Md. side. General Rode's forces are at Hagerstown and General Early is crossing the river near Williamsport. The cavalry have been a long ways up in Penn. I have no idea what this move means. We cannot accomplish anything by crossing into Maryland…if we fight them over there…we will get whipped…[June 19]…when I closed I did not know where we were going but do now. We are now in Maryland. We crossed about one mile below Shepardstown…we are going to capture Harpers Ferry. There is about 12,000 Yankees there…this move was made for that purpose. I do not feel right on this side of the river. I would much rather be on the Va. side of the Potomac…I hope the good Lord will bring me safe through this campaign. If it should be His will that I should not I hope He will take me to Himself where strife will cease and wars never come…oh, that this cruel war may stop and we be permitted to return home…you must not be uneasy about me for I intend to take good care of myself…goods of every find are very cheap here if [only] we had the Yankees friends…Confederate money wont pass…J. W. Middleton…". Overall VG
