Parole, 7-1/2" x 2-1/2", partially printed and filled out in manuscript, “Office of Provost Marshal” City of Danville, April 29, 1865, certifying that Thomas Wellford, who enlisted late in the war as a Sergeant in Company E of the 3rd Virginia Local Defense Infantry, is paroled. Wellford lived in Fredericksburg, Virginia and this is so noted on the parole. The parole is filled out and signed by Lt. Col. Stephen C. Fletcher, a resident of Skowhegan, Maine becoming Lieut. Colonel of the 1st Maine Veteran Infantry in July 1864. Fletcher signs as the Provost Marshal City of Danville. The Confederate government was established in Danville April 3rd and left the city April 10th upon news of Lee’s surrender. The Mayor of Danville surrender the city April 27th. This is an exceptionaly rare item. (We sold one in 2004 for $2400).
