A good war-date concerned citizen's letter, 1p. 4to., written by a certain "James Gregory", on behalf of the mother of Lieutenant Robert Brown, Marblehead, Mass., Nov. 18, 1861, to Chaplain Quint of the 2nd Mass. Vols., reading, in part: "At the request of my wife the fond & anxious mother of one only child Robert B. Brown I venture to trouble you with an inquiry respecting her said son who is Second Lieutenant of Company C commanded by Capt. [William] Cogwell [WIA Chancellorsville, Va., 5/02/63, brevet brigadier general 12/15/64] of your regiment. She received a letter from him dated shortly after the disaster at Edward's Ferry, detailing the hardship to which the regiment had been exposed during its long…march in consequence of that affair, but has not received a word from him since, although had…been in the habit of writing her once every week…under these circumstances she feels very anxious & fears that sickness…is the unfortunate cause of his not writing…will you therefore, Rev. Sir, much oblige the mother as well as the writer…to drop her a line…and inform us…James Gregory." Near fine
