A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Henry H. Fulton, Co. E, 20th Ohio Vols. [shot by Rebel guerrillas near Pine Level, N. C.,4/10/65; DOW Raleigh, 4/12/65], Bolivar, Tenn., Oct. 30, [1862], in part: "…we were ordered on a march. We had to…prepare rations for two days and by night we were started…the new recruits had their choice to go or stay in camp…I chose to go. There were two regiments of infantry and one of cavalry with two pieces of artillery, twelve pound Howitzers. We started south not knowing where we were going. We went thirteen miles from camp when we come to where the rebels had been camped the night before. We could see where they had fed their horses and had burned several bales of cotton. We…sent out our pickets and planted our cannon and then commenced getting our dinner…some of our boys got some chickens and…sweet potato…the cavalry made a dash for some fodder stacks nearby. Everything in the country belongs to the soldier. We burnt rails for cooking our dinner. After dinner the cavalry started…to reconnoiter. They were gone about three hours and came with six prisoners that they caught on picket…at Grand Junction nine miles further on. They reported the Rebels seventeen miles farther south…this would take us another day to get there and we had but two days rations…we got back to camp at eleven o'clock. I never was so tired in my life…we expect to stay here all winter. The place is well fortified. There are thirty thousand men here and more coming every day. We are under General Hurlburt. Tomorrow we have to go on a grand review. This is a hard place to write. I have to write on a drum head and the boys make such a fuss that I don't know what I am writing…Henry."
