A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Henry H. Fulton, Co. E, 20th Ohio Vols. [shot by Rebel guerrillas near Pine Level, N. C.,4/10/65; DOW Raleigh, 4/12/65], Jefferson Hospital, Memphis, Tenn., Jan. 19, 1863, in part: "…I left Lafayette on the 17th on the cars for Memphis…within seventeen miles of Memphis the cars run off the track. They were heavily loaded with ammunition besides a great many soldiers. There were four men killed dead and three died the next day…I was a good deal cut and bruised…my left leg is cut above and below the knee and my breast is hurt some caused by a box of cartridges falling on it. The car I was in turned upside down. It was a cattle car…I was sitting on a pile of cartridge boxes…the car was smashed…to atoms and all that were in it were either killed or wounded. The first thing I knew was that I was laying on my head and shouldered…my feet sticking strait up with guns and boxes over and around me so tight [that] I could not move an inch. I could hear the men at work trying to get us out. We had to lay there a good while before they could get to us. There was a Regt stationed where we run off and they helped us out and took care of us or we would have nearly all died. I could not have lived fifteen minutes longer in the position I was in. I heard one of the men that was helping me out say to be careful. There was a dead man next to me…I could see him laying right against me with his brains knocked out there were two men killed within a few feet of me. The way I come to be on the train was I had a sore foot…the doctor said I was not fit to march so he sent me on the cars…the Regt will be here tomorrow and then take the boat for Vicksburg. I think I will be able to go with the Regt…I lost my blanket and boots the night the cars run off. I lost my knapsack and hat and everything only what I had on, but found my knapsack and hat the next morning…Henry Fulton." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG
