A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Henry H. Fulton, Co. E, 20th Ohio Vols. [shot by Rebel guerrillas near Pine Level, N. C.,4/10/65; DOW Raleigh, 4/12/65], Memphis, Tenn., Jan. 30, 1863, in part: "…the Rebels had torn up the rail road…we could not send any mail and were on half rations all this time…our brigade took possession of a mill and we forged corn and hogs…the trouble was we could not get salt. I have been in the hospital for two weeks and come to Regt yesterday…one leg is sore yet but I can walk very well…the boys in the company knew I was in Memphis but could not find me. Harve Simmons hunted all one day for me…they were very much surprised when I come to camp. They heard I had my leg and arm both broken…theConfederate note [I am sending] I can do nothing with here. If I had it down in Mississippi I could have got full value for it…I like the army better than I expected but we have some pretty hard times…let me know what has become of Hen. Smith. They say he deserted at Columbus. He has been reduced to ranks. You need not tell it in Homer. It may not be true…Henry H. Fulton." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG
