A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 6pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Henry H. Fulton, Co. E, 20th Ohio Vols. [shot by Rebel guerrillas near Pine Level, N. C.,4/10/65; DOW Raleigh, 4/12/65], Vicksburg, [Miss.], Aug. 5, [1863], to his mother, in part: "…Mrs. Bostwick got through all strait. There is two of her nosy with her. One of them brought my things to me last night…Bostwick is 1st Lieut of Co. E and he has one boy in Co. G of this Regt…one in the 96th and one of his boys died at Shiloh…the fighting is done here…yet the government seems to be making preparations for a long campaign. What do the people of the north think of the war. Has the draft been made yet and has Newton got clear. Some of our officers went home after drafted men…it is reported the Regt will be discharged in April next. It was organized in the three months service and will be discharged in three years from that time. The 76th is out at Black river. Joe McClintic…are here on a hospital boat. Joe is not very well. I don't think I ever told Joe that Newton was a copperhead. If I did it was in fun. I let him read some letters at the bend and he might have taken it from that. I am not a republican as you have heard but am for the prosecution of the war…Henry…we have a fair view of the city and river from our camp…[to his father]…your views on politics suit me very much. I am glad you will not vote for Vallandingham. I do not object so much to the speeches he was arrested for making…they were published in the New York Circissian [?] and distributed among the soldiers while we were ate Memphis. Our camps were full of them and they caused numerous desertions. Vallandigham has been a mischief maker from the start. He is certainly a smart man but that don't make him a true patriot…[much on Brough Ohio's Republican candidate for governor]…I don't know anything about his morality. About me being a republican. I am not and never told anyone I was but always said I was for the vigorous prosecution of the war believing that to be the shortest way to peace. I am a Douglas Dem yet and believe that the democrats are right, but are so much prejudiced against the republican party that they hate to support the present administration…I am glad they have stopped political talk in town." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG
