War-date Union soldier's battle letter, 3pp., 8vo., written by Pvt. Marshall Smith, Co. B, 122nd New York Vols. [WIA Cedar Creek, Va., 10/19/64], Camp Sedgwick, [Va.], Nov. 21, 1863, in part: "…we have been very busy for the last month. We have had drills, inspections, reviews yes even fights. In our fight at Rappahannock Station a part of our regiment was on the skirmish line while the remainder were supporting a battery. While we were in the rear of the battery a shell from a rebel gun burst in the midst of our company killing two men instantly [actually three, Sgt. Philo Ruggles, and Pvts. Patrick Kelley & James Spurlock] & wounding 4 others. Lieut. Gilbert is wounded in the feet. I think not dangerously [actually, he had both feet amputated]…we should have to go without our dinner for it rains so that we cannot cook it…yesterday…the whole of our Corps (the 6th) was out on a review by Maj. Gen. Sedgwick & 4 officers of the Royal British guards. They were very good looking fellows. I saw them as they passed close by me. Have you heard [from your] lost brother yet [Pvt. George E. Dibble, 12th Conn. Died 6/05/63]…I hope that you have heard from him ere this for I know that my sisters are anxious to hear from me every week & when they don't…they are sure to think that some mishap has befallen me. Your brother in the 2nd Corps [Pvt. Augustus L. Dibble 14th Conn. Vols. WIA Antietam & Wilderness] is he well. I intended to have visited his Reg ere this but circumstances would not permit. They are some way from here & I cannot leave the company long enough to visit them…your friend…Marshall Smith." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG to near fine
