War-date Union soldier's letter, 2 1/2pp. 4to., written by Pvt. Thomas J. Bond, Co. G, 2nd Ohio Vols., Murfreesboro, Tenn., Feb. 15, 1863, in part: "…I do not know what we are going to get paid this week…I will get about 7 months and that will be $91.00. That is quite a pile of money. We drawer potatoes and onions. We got 9 potatoes and 14 onions for 176 men…[we] played cards for them…that made a pretty good mess for the one that wins…I was over part of the battle field it looks so gloomy…to see the graves of the dead scattered over the fields and woods. You can see the graves of dead rebels…their arms and legs sticking out of the graves. It looks hideous to behold them and it is sickening. The trees is cut down and tore up by shells from our cannon. There is a large house that is full of holes by our cannon. [It] is quite a difference in this place from what it was one year ago…everything is tore and mashed up. The fine dwellings is destroyed and are not worth anything now…I do not know when we will move…they are talking about using this division to guard this place…I hope they will for I do not want to march anymore…there is a great many agoing to desert when they get paid off. For my part if I can not get discharged honorably I will stay till the war is over…I will never desert as long as this war lasts…I do not want to disgrace my relations…[Chaplain Maxwell] Gaddis has left us and gone home so we will not here any good sermons and you will not get any…more of his good letters from the 2 OVI. [Anson G.] McCook [brigadier general 3/13/65] is our Col. now. The boys do not like him very well…he is too hard on the men…Thomas J. Bond…". The original stamped transmittal cover is included.
