A good war-date Iowa civilian letter, 2pp. 4to., written by Fanny Wood, on behalf of her family, Bellevue, Jackson Co. Iowa, Aug. 13, [1864], to Mattahew Carnahan, in part: "…James has got his discharge. He was discharged in the hospital in Jefferson City last September…his disease was neuralgia and chronic diarrhea …John is still in the service. He is in Georgia at Atlanta. He was driving team the last letter….he has been driving team since February…there has been a great dele of hard fighten in Georgia lately. Every day thare is letters coming in that brings the death of some of our neighbors that has fallen on the battlefield or wounded or taken prisoner. I cant tell you how many has been left widow and orphans around here since this wicked Rebellion has commenced…I suppose it is the same way whare you live…I see the Rebs has been visited old Pennsylvania again. You are aware that [Drummer] John Carnahan [78th Penn. Vols.] is dead. He died in St. Louis hospital…David Carnahan is no more he departed this life on Monday night…whet crops was almost a failure on account of the dry weather and the Chinese Bugs…there is no rafts running and very few steam boats except the packets …when this reaches you write…and let us know …if John [Carnahan 67th Penn.] is still in the army. Our John had been in ten battles before he went to Georgia. Then he was detailed to drive team. He says he likes teaming first rate…". Also included is the original stamped transmittal cover.
