A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 8vo., written, on patriotic stationery, by Pvt. William P. Lamson, Jr. [KIA Wilderness, Va., May 5, 1864], Co. B, 20th Maine Vols., Frederick, Maryland, Sept. 14, 1862, in part: "We arrived here about an hour or 2 ago. We left Arlington heights Friday morning & marched 15 or 20 miles yesterday…& today 18. One days march did not use me up as Aunt Mary said it would. Friday night there was only 19 men of our Co. got into camp. 6 or 8 have fallen out of the Regt. sun struck or fainted. We have heard cannon all day & there is one continual roar now…we left our knapsacks at Arlington & only brought our blankets, guns etc. We start early tomorrow for somewhere I don't know…we are in Butterfield's Brig. & Porter's Army Corps…I will write when I get a chance perhaps not for 2 or 3 weeks. Your aff. son, W. P. Lamson." VG
