War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Private David W. Moser, 199th Penn. Vols., Burkesville Station, Va., April 20, 1865, in part: "…we had a time of following Old Lee and we cached him at last and I am very glad of it but we had to go it to get him…we went [all] over the country. We seen some very nice farms and nice homes where the old rebs lived as nice places as I wanted but we sen but very few white folks, some drakes but as we come back we seen a good many that come home and a great many gone home but it seems to me as if they was not pleased with us Yankees but pleased or not they cant help themselves and I am glad of it…I seen in your and Mr. Houser's letter that I was drafted…tell them that they waited too long for to get me…as I got 7 months before they got my name out of the box. We have sorrowful news here about our old Friend Abraham…he was shot in Washington and I am very sorry for it as I am shire he was a good man for our country and a friend to all soldiers…I heard it some time ago but could not believe it…but yesterday we had to believe it. Well they could not beat him at the elections then them sugars had to kill him but if we have to do any more fighting we will pay them in their own money as I [will] never take a prisoner if I can kill him. I will as sure as they killed old Abraham but I hope that our wise president will fetch them and will make them remember …give my love to all the young, napers, but not to Copperheads as I am more down o them then ever since they killed old Abe…D. W. Moser." Moser's German dialect phonetic spelling has mostly been corrected. Light stains, else VG
