Confederate Soldier’s letter written by “Henry S. Figures” who enlisted as a 1st Lieutenant into Field & Staff AL 48th Infantry; He was Killed on 5/6/1864 at Wilderness, VA. Written on official “Confederate States, War Department, Montgomery” April 22, 1861, 3pp., VG. In part, “It is now after five o’clock Monday evening. It is working hours, but I have got nothing to do just now, but I expect some work to come in every minute. Genl. Patterson is going at 8 o’clock tonight & I am in a great hurry, so you must excuse my bad writing. I got a letter from Sandy White this morning. He said the college girls were going to give the Huntsville Guards a flag and Annie Brown & Sallie McKie were going to give it to them. I would like to be there very much & to have a little speech so as to respond to her (Annie Brown), but I am not there. .... There is a great many news here. Comes everyday by telegraph to the Secretary of War & him or someone else made it to the people out in the streets. They bring out the cannon & fire it 2 or 3 nights ago. The Hon. Roger A. Pryor from Virginia spoke. His eyes sparkle like fire...”
