Confederate Soldier’s letter written by “Sam(ue)l Baker, 4pp., datelined Hd qrts, White Cavalry, Camp near Paris, October 12, 1863. The 35th Battalion, Virginia Cavalry Organized in January 1862, by adding companies to E. V. White's Cavalry Company. Containing six companies, it was assigned to W. E. Jones', Rosser's, and J. Dearing's Brigade in the Army of Northern Virginia. This unit skirmished in western Virginia and during the Gettysburg operations remained in the state. Later it was active in the Shenandoah Valley and disbanded during April 1865. Lieutenant Colonel Elijah V. White, and Majors George M. Ferneyhough and Franklin M. Myers were in command. In part, “We made a raid last week into Fairfax County within six miles of Georgetown and brought out 21 prisoners and 63 horses ... the enemy followed us with 550 Cavalry and drove us to the mountains ... The Col. is off now with a scout of forty men and you may again hear of the adventures of this bloody 35th battalion ...”
