The three page letter is datelined Camp 48th Mississippi, February 10th, 1863. He writes in part, “We were detailed as a working party the other day and were down on the river & I seen one of our men wade across the river & get two papers & some coffee from a Yankee who was on picket there was five or six of the Yankees & when our man got across the river they all run down the bank to shake hands with him so you may judge by that, that there is not much danger in our pickets shooting at one another… Our line of defense is about twenty five miles long & very well fortified at every suitable point along the line. Our pickets stand on one side of the river & the Yankees on the other…”
