War-date Union soldier's letter, 5 1/3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Daniel D. Barrows, Co. E, 9th Maine Vols., [later Signal Corps], Fort Walker, Camp Campbell, Hilton Head, S. C., Dec. 12, 1861, in part: "…there is a great deal of sickness in the regiment, some one being buried every day…we are building a tremendous entrenchment about 5 miles in length and there is from two to three thousand men at work on it all the time. Our company came in from…picket last Friday. We had bully times. Two of us took a boat and went over to the main [land] within a few rods of the Rebel pickets and stole a nice pleasure boat and got off without being discovered. John A. and me went over to Bull's Island in sight of the Rebels and took two mules and got the Niggers to help us get them over in a boat. We visited a number of planter's mansions and got any quantity of reading matter and curiosities…there is nothing here…sold by sutlers but tobacco…I am going to send you a small sample of cotton [included] which I picked up on Bull's Island. It is sea island cotton…D. D. Barrows". VG. (Cotton relic included)
