War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 4to., written by Pvt. Daniel D. Barrows, Co. E, 9th Maine Vols., [later Signal Corps], Hilton Head, S. C., Jan. 26, 1862, in part: "…there has been an expedition fitted out here of about 50,000 men. They lay outside the bar in sight and are…destined for Savannah. Three regiments of our brigade have gone and we shall be likely to be called on as a reserve. At any rate there has got to be a bloody fight there in a short time if we are successful…we shall make a strike on Charleston…we shall give them a Yankee invitation to evacuate and probably they will be polite enough to accept…we are doing a great business here building store houses, wharfs and barracks for the d-d niggers. We have to lay on the ground…a white man is as good as a nigger anytime if he only behaves himself…Lieut. Brooks sends his regards. He is liked…first rate. I wish we had him in the lieu of the d-d thing we have got. [1st Lt. Ansel G. Marston.] Damn him. I will remember his favors when we get home. I'll put him in mind of the last dinner he eat in Saco…it is impossible to tell…when we shall get our money. I suppose they want to…get some of us killed…so that they can pocket some of the change. I shall rather go into a dozen fights than to stay here in this sandy hole…someone wrote…that most of the Saco boys kept half drunk all the time…I have not sen liquor enough since I have been on the island to drown a rat…D. D. Barrows". VG
