War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Daniel D. Barrows, Co. E, 9th Maine Vols., [later Signal Corps], Warsau Island, Ga., Feb. 15. 1862, in part: "…we have left Hilton Head and are now on Warsau Island about 20 miles south in sight of Fort Pulaski and the rebel gunboats plying on the Savannah river and ten heavy batteries on the Wilmington river…a few miles from us their force is…ten times our number…we are in a precarious situation…this is the most god forsaken place I ever was in…there is not a plantation on the island but mud and sand…a very unhealthy place. We are all as lousy as the devil. It is not uncommon to see half a tent's crew…with their shirts off hunting for the stripe backs. They are as large a buck bison…if we happen to leave one you will hear him whistling for his mate. There is any quantity of snakes and alligators. We have killed some of the latter 14 ft. long…our division has been knocked about the worst of any set…I…hope this will be settled up soon if [not] by fighting…by congress. Let them hurry up their cakes for this suspense is killing the soldiers off faster than the fighting…we came from Hilton Head in the steamer Star of the South where [Lt.] John Andrews now lies sick with the bilious fever. He has not had his senses for three days. The doctor…said that he don't think he can live but a short time. Poor John. It is hard to die in such a hole as this. There is a great deal of sickness out here owing to the way we are exposed…we live worse than the hogs …if ever I should get home…and know I could save the whole d-d country by enlisting for 24 hours I would not do it…there are too many d-d scoundrels bleeding the poor soldiers…D. D. Barrows." VG
