War-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 4to., written by Pvt. Daniel D. Barrows, Co. E, 9th Maine Vols., [later Signal Corps], Warsaw Island, [Ga.], Feb. 18. 1862, in part: "It is my painful duty to inform you of the death of Lieut. John H. Andrews. Our regiment left Seabrook, Hilton Head the 6th…on b oar the Star of the South…were placed on board the the Robert J. Mercer. We came to anchor in Warsaw Inlet the 7th. That night John was taken sick and everything was done that could be done for him. He was removed to the Star of the South where there were better accommodations. I was with him two nights. He failed very fast when at 4 o'clock on the morning of the 16th he breathed his last. He died of the Billious intermittent fever. He was a great sufferer. He was unconscious three days..I have just returned from helping prepare his body for burial. The poor fellow has done a great deal towards forwarding dead bodies home. He has been the means of sending three home but it is impossible for us to forward him…on account of the decomposition. Mortification has taken place throughout his whole body. His nearest friends would not recognize him. It is hard to die in such a god forsaken place…but such is the fate of war. We should sent his remains to Hilton Head fro burial but there was no steamer ready to start…this afternoon at 2 o'clock we consigned to the earth his remains with military honors. Whose turn it will be next god only knows. It is very unhealthy here…we shall [not] stop here long. Three months here would destroy half the regiment…they want to destroy us by disease. Sleeping on the wet, sandy, lousy and dirty it is enough to kill the devil…D. D. Barrows". VG
