War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Daniel D. Barrows, Signal Corps, [formerly 9th Maine Vols.], "Head Quarters Signal Detachment, Morris Island, S. C., Dec. 18, 1864", in part: "…business is beginning to get lively in this Dept.. Our troops are doing some desperate fighting on the Savannah and Charleston Railroad. Our batteries command the Pocotaligo bridge on the road Sherman has taken. Fort McAllister is just below Savannah and has commenced siege operations against the city. It will probably surrender before you receive this. Charleston comes next and with Foster in the front and Sherman in the rear will make warm work for the rebs in Charleston…the opening of spring will find us in possession of both cities…Sherman will make short work with Savannah…Foster is to be reenforced…we have not heard form Savannah since Sherman demanded the surrender. Shall…hear soon. The exchange of prisoners was going on at Savannah when Sherman made his appearance. The port of exchange was immediately removed to this harbor. This exchange has shown…the most damnable atrocities committed by the rebel authorities…of the ten thousand we received…for the same number of health men…not two thousand will ever be able to labor again. [They re] entirely broken down. Health and constitution gone, starvation and exposure done it all. They were pitiful objects to look at , mere skeletons. Forty five were brought ashore here and buried that died in one night…and hundreds more will share their fate before reaching north…I bled a few of the devils before I eave the service. We are too easy with our prisoners. I would starve every Devil of them that would not take the oath…its no worse for them than it is for our men…Daniel D. Barrows". VG
